Madison Magazine Serengeti Migration Safari Itinerary

Tour hosted by: Ombeni Emanuel & Madison Magazine Editor Karen Lincoln Michel and Senior Writer Doug Moe

Day 1: Arrival -Kilimanjaro International Airport
Your African safari begins when you step off the plane in Kilimanjaro, where you will be met by our professional ground team, guided by Professor Charles Swai. Enjoy a cold drink and a smooth, comfortable ride in our private, customized Land Cruiser, where it’s just a 35-minute trip to our Mount Meru Village home: Nyumbani, as “Nyumbani” means “home” in Swahili. Ombeni’s guests are considered family VIPs, and you will experience what we know about Tanzania as if you were our family

Nyumbani Estate With family and friends waiting, music on the stereo, a fire in the fireplace and tea and cocktails upon arrival. This estate is only six bedrooms, welcoming you as a rustic, intimate oasis tucked away in a tropical plantation, and the perfect place to unwind after your flight. Arusha is only three degrees south of the equator, but its 4,500-foot elevation encourages floral luxuriance and gentle breezes with birds and monkeys jumping around
Day 2&3: Tarangire National Park
The sixth largest national park in Tanzania, Tarangire National Park is well-known for its vast herds of elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and buffalo. Your driver and guide is a highly-trained wildlife expert whose ability to spot animals and birds, along with his knowledge of the species you see, will fascinate you.

Your second day in Tarangire National Park features morning and afternoon game drives through the savanna grasslands. Enjoy panoramic views of baobab and acacia trees as you encounter the largest elephants in Africa, as well as elands, zebra, and Cape buffalo that congregate around the waterholes. Between and after game drives, you’ll relax at the award-winning Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge, where you’ll enjoy dinner and another beautiful night’s sleep among the diverse African wildlife.

DAY 2 : Maramboi Tented camps On the 2nd Day, we will reach the Maramboi Maramboi Tented Camp. Tented Camp. Maramboi is 30 minute distanced from the Tarangire National Park and is a famous known game area. It is also aimed for the lower end of the market for its tourists. If you are keen to view the Tarangire but not interested in visiting the northern are and want to keep your cost down, then Maramboi is the best option.

DAY 3: Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge
Tarangire Treetop Lodge is built around a thousand year-old baobab tree. Each of the Treetop Rooms boasts one of the largest bedrooms to be found in any camp or lodge in East Africa, and all are stilted above ground, enabling you beautiful views of the surrounding fauna
Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park
We will follow what we call “The Ernest Hemingway Route”. We’ll enjoy one last game drive in Tarangire en route to Lake Manyara National Park, which lies at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. This small park is surprisingly diverse, ranging from groundwater forests to grassy plains, to the alkaline Lake Manyara itself.

Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge
Nestled on the rim of the Great African Rift Valley with stunning views over Lake Manyara, Mount Meru and on a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro. The lodge is set on pristine lush green gardens and local vegetation with over 130 species of birds
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater with Maasai Warriors
Today we embark into the heart of Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater, the Eden of Africa. First, you’ll enjoy a cultural adventure with Maasai Warriors in the Ngorongoro area. A full-day game drive inside Ngorongoro Crater is a ‘oncein-a-lifetime’ opportunity to spot all the African wildlife you’ve been yearning to see. The crater is technically a caldera: the world’s largest unflooded caldera, in fact.

Oldeani Lodge
Oldeani is a 5-star colonial lodge located on a picturesque hill with spectacular views onto Oldeani Mountain and the Ngorongoro Crater Rim. The lodge is elevated with 360-degree views that extend all the way to Lake Eyasi and Lake Manyara, and the property is set on 40 acres of pristine lush green gardens and local vegetation with over 130 species of birds
Day 6: Serengeti National Park
Today we drive you to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s largest and most famous national park. But first, we make a stop at the Olduvai Gorge, a destination internationally recognized for Louis and Mary Leakey’s famous discoveries of early humans and great antiquities documenting the evolutionary history of our stone tool-using ancestors, vertebrate fauna, and environments over the last two million years. After we reach the gate of Serengeti, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch to fuel the afternoon game drive. Home to the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, Serengeti attracts visitors from around the world and is perfect for game viewing. Unwind in the wondrous Serengeti Pioneer Luxury Tented Camp, which boasts superlative access to the annual migration and tracking the ‘Big 5′ around the year.

Day 6: Serengeti Pioneer Camp
This camp brings nostalgia to the forefront, paying homage to the mobile camps of the 1930’s, a time when an African safari was truly a journey into the unknown. The camp’s ‘zero footprint’ and close proximity to nature combines to make an unmistakably distinctive and truly individual offering.
Days 7 & 8: Serengeti Migration Camp: the Wild Side of Africa
Serengeti Migration Camp
Each tent has its own 36-degree verandah deck, giving you a private sanctuary for game sightings and the bush. The beautiful tented rooms offer the comforts of home, and include flushing toilets, en suite showers, a desk and fan.
Day 9 : MERU & NYUMBANI ESTATE NIGHT CELEBRATION”
On Day 10, you’ll get to see how your choice to safari with Ombeni African Safari impacts the Meru village, as a portion of your safari directly benefits the people of the Meru village, the Songoro Primary School and supporting the development of the Songoro Health Clinic.

On a guided walking safari with the Maasai Warriors, we’ll also have a chance to see scenes from Hatari!, the 1962 John Wayne movie set against Mount Meru.

Traditional Massai Lodge
This is the right place to get to know them and their traditions and rituals, together with a slowing-down of your own lives’ pace. It‘s all about being together, traditions, stories and learning from each other.
Day 11: Relaxing day with options and departure
On your final day in Tanzania, you’ll have the option to do a guided biking safari or a guided walking tour with the Maasai, followed by a spear competition activity, and the opportunity to learn about the traditions of the Maasai, including their dances, costumes and so much more. You can also do a Mount Meru village tour or hike, or enjoy monkey and bird watching at Nyumbani.

“It's more than just a safari; it's a life-changing experience.”

"Our safari to Tanzania under the auspices of Ombeni African Safaris was one of the most memorable vacations we ever had. The guides we had were professional, knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and personable. We were more than satisfied with the services they provided. We were amazed at what we saw while on safari. We visited five national parks, and the wildlife viewing was beyond our wildest imagination. We saw vast varieties of wildlife up close and personal. The accommodations at the lodges we stayed at were very good, and we enjoyed the food. We are extremely satisfied with our experience."
