Madison Magazine Serengeti Migration Safari Itinerary

Tour hosted by: Ombeni Emanuel & Madison Magazine Editor Karen Lincoln Michel and Senior Writer Doug Moe

Day 1: Arrival - Kilimanjaro and Arusha
Your African safari begins when you step off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be met by our professional ground team. Enjoy a cold drink and a smooth, comfortable ride in our private, customized Land Cruiser. It’s just a 35-minute trip to the luxurious Lake Duluti Coffee Lodge. This rustic oasis tucked away in a tropical plantation is a perfect place to unwind after your flight. Arusha is only three degrees south of the equator, but its 4,500-foot elevation encourages floral luxuriance and gentle breezes. Enjoy dinner at the lodge before a good night’s sleep.
Day 2: Tarangire National Park and the Famous Elephant Herds
Today, you’ll travel from Arusha to the stupendous Tarangire National Park, well-known for its vast herds of elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and buffalo. Tarangire is famous for its baobab trees, many of which are over a thousand years old! Your driver and guide is a highly-trained wildlife expert, whose ability to spot animals and birds, along with his knowledge of the species you see, will fascinate you. Enjoy an afternoon game drive, and then check-in for two nights of luxurious accommodations at the Maramboi Luxury Tented Lodge. Amazing vistas will include not only the beautiful African landscape, but just about the entire cast of wild African characters, including some rarities such as kudu and oryx. We’ll make early-morning and afternoon game drives, and perhaps take a walking safari with a local Maasai guide. If you’re still keen to see more all-star creatures, you can go out on a night drive – always a revelation!
Day 3: Tarangire National Park: Tarangire Treetops
Your second day in Tarangire National Park features morning and afternoon game drives through the savanna grasslands. Enjoy panoramic views of baobab and acacia trees as you encounter the largest elephants in Africa, as well as elands, zebra, and Cape buffalo that congregate around the waterholes. Between and after game drives, you’ll relax at the award-winning Tarangire Treetops safari lodge, where you’ll enjoy dinner and another beautiful night’s sleep among the diverse African wildlife.
Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park
Today, we’ll follow what we call “The Ernest Hemingway Route”. We’ll enjoy one last game drive in Tarangire en route to Lake Manyara National Park, which lies at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. This small park is surprisingly diverse, ranging from groundwater forests to grassy plains, to the alkaline Lake Manyara itself. During our game drive, be sure to watch for elephants, Cape buffalo, and giraffes. The park is also home to the world’s largest troops of baboon ever documented! Finally, we’ll continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the night, where you’ll enjoy dinner and another comfortable stay at Kitela Luxury Lodge.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater with Maasai Warriors
Today we embark into the heart of Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater, the Eden of Africa. First, you’ll enjoy a cultural adventure with Maasai Warriors in the Ngorongoro area. A full day game drive inside Ngorongoro Crater is a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity to spot all the African wildlife you’ve been yearning to see. The crater is technically a caldera: world’s largest unflooded caldera, in fact. It’s more than 2,000 feet deep with a floor covering over 102 square miles. Wildlife viewing here is fantastic, as most of the animals stay in this area year round. You can see lion, Cape buffalo, hippo, elephant, and flamingo. This is also your best chance to see the rare black rhinoceros. A picnic lunch will be served in the crater. Later you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Luxury Farm House or Ngorongoro Luxury Manor.
Day 6: Serengeti National Park
Today we drive you to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s largest and most famous national park. But first, we make a stop at the Olduvai Gorge, a destination internationally recognized for Louis and Mary Leakey’s famous discoveries of early humans and great antiquities documenting the evolutionary history of our stone tool-using ancestors, vertebrate fauna, and environments over the last two million years. After we reach the gate of Serengeti, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch to fuel the afternoon game drive. Home to the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, Serengeti attracts visitors from around the world and is perfect for game viewing. Unwind in the wondrous Serengeti Pioneer Luxury Tented Camp, which boasts superlative access to the annual migration and tracking the ‘Big 5′ around the year.
Days 7 & 8: Serengeti Migration Camp: the Wild Side of Africa
Roam the Serengeti witnessing the Great Serengeti Migration near Northern Serengeti Migration River. On Day 8, we will embark on a Serengeti hot air balloon tour followed by “bush breakfast” with champagne. Continue exploring this vast national park during morning and afternoon game drives. You will see an abundance of animals, including the famous Serengeti lions, elephants, giraffe, gazelle, and Eland. Between game drives indulge in treats of the lavish Serengeti Migration Camp. Just 20 luxurious, richly furnished safari tents blend seamlessly into the plains of Serengeti. Enjoy your private wildlife theater in surround sound: each tent has its own 360-degree verandah.
Day 9: Arusha National Park & Meru Village
This morning we will depart from Serengeti National Park to Arusha National Park. Every drive inside a national park is an exciting chance to spot wildlife! Enjoy lunch in the town of Arusha before continuing towards Ombeni’s home village called Meru. We will drive up close to Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania. Our Land Cruiser will be left at Ombeni’s farm, and we will hike to Lemika Hill at the foot of Mt. Meru. We will walk back through scenic banana and coffee plantations, admiring gorgeous views towards Arusha and Mt Meru. Finally, we will depart to Arusha National Park where we will stay overnight at Africa Amini Life Maasai Lodge.
Day 10: Arusha National Park Walking Safari & the Maasai
Today we’ll spend time with the Maasai warriors and explore the base of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro via Ngabobo village. We will have spear competition with the Maasai Warriors and get to know their culture, dances, and celebrations. You will stay at the traditional Maasai Lodge and have unique access to get up close with Maasai and Meru cultures for experiences only possible deep in Africa.
Day 11: Departure from Kilimanjaro
Today we will say goodbye to Tanzania. You will have the morning to relax at your hotel, shop in the Arusha local market for souvenirs and return to your hotel where you will relax, or you can walk around the coffee plantations until departure time. Two hours before your flight, our your guide will drive you to Kilimanjaro International Airport to arrive in time for your homebound flight.

“It's more than just a safari; it's a life-changing experience.”

"Our safari to Tanzania under the auspices of Ombeni African Safaris was one of the most memorable vacations we ever had. The guides we had were professional, knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and personable. We were more than satisfied with the services they provided. We were amazed at what we saw while on safari. We visited five national parks, and the wildlife viewing was beyond our wildest imagination. We saw vast varieties of wildlife up close and personal. The accommodations at the lodges we stayed at were very good, and we enjoyed the food. We are extremely satisfied with our experience."
